The Boy Scout Oath includes “On my honor I will do my Best to do my duty to God and my country…”and the twelfth (last) point of the Scout Law reads: “A Scout is reverent. A Scout is reverent toward God.  He is faithful in his religious duties.  He respects the beliefs of others.”

Brief History of the Boy Scouts of America

In 1907, Britain’s Lieutenant General Robert Baden-Powell, hero of the siege of Mafeking during the Boer War, organized a troop of boys in a camp at Brownsea Island near Poole England, realizing his quest to bring skills and adventures that he had seen in south African boys to the boys of England. He noticed that there was little for the inner-city boys of 1900s England to do and wanted to expose them to the outdoor life.

That modest beginning led to the organization of today, which has expanded to more than 160 Scout Associations around the world.  A program for girls, Guiding, was soon established and grew as well.  Both programs lead to the founding of the BSA and the GSA (Girl Scouts of America) in 1910 and 1912, respectively.

2007 was the 100th anniversary of the movement and 2010 was the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the BSA in the United States.

 Scouting’s Guiding Rules:

The Boy Scout Oath includes “On my honor I will do my Best to do my duty to God and my country…”and the twelfth (last) point of the Scout Law reads: “A Scout is reverent. A Scout is reverent toward God.  He is faithful in his religious duties.  He respects the beliefs of others.”

There are three major programs and some minor ones: The major ones are:  Cub Scouting for Kindergarten through fifth grade boys; Boy Scouting for boys in the sixth grade through their 18th birthday; and Venturing for boys and girls in the ninth grade through their 21st birthday. Minor programs include: STEM Labs, a program for high school-aged youth to involve them in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; and Exploring Posts, a career -based program for 10-21-year-olds.

Boy Scouting in the USA is a program which , for youth and adults, requires a belief in a supreme being. It has three program aims for our youth: character development, citizenship training, and moral and physical fitness.

Scouting at Fort King:

Fort King's Bob Schlegel, currently serves in various capacities in Scouting at the local (district), council, regional and national levels. He is the chartered organizational representative of the church; he is also its voting member of the local Scout district (Marion) and council (North Florida).

In 2014 the BSA voted to allow openly gay Scouts to be admitted to the organization and many conservative churches ceased use of the Scouting program – Ft. King Presbyterian Church agreed to sponsor two such units that were asked to leave their churches and we became the chartered partner (a BSA term) for Cub Scout Pack 440 and Boy Scout Troop 196.
Subsequently Venturing Crew 196 was formed to serve the needs of young men and women who wanted to be involved in Scouting’s outdoor programs.

Scouting units "belong" to the organizations that sponsor them (chartered partners) and in our case, they are a youth ministry of the church.

The Boy Scouts Meet in the Youth House on Tuesday evenings; the Cub Scouts meet in the Education Center/ Fellowship Hall on Monday Nights;  the Venturing Crew meets on Wednesdays in the Fellowship Hall irregularly during the year.
