Good morning fellow believers,

As you know, I had a tough bout with covid and dental surgery.  WOW!!!!  It was a rough ride!

Anyway, here is our profound thought to ponder:

“Good friends are like stars.  You don’t always see them, but you know they are there.”  (anon.)

I don't think I've ever heard such a timely thought.  Jo Anne's introducing us to "Star Words" last year and this year has much meaning for me.  I loved the way she combined her star word from last year and this year in her sermon.  It was then I realized how my star words, "family" and "refuge", had a deeper meaning that I thought.

You must understand that all of you, my "family," were my "refuge" during my trying times (and all the time).  Though I cannot see you all the time, I feel your prayers and your supplications on my behalf, and I know you are there for me.

God bless you!     With a song in my heart,  Rick

Crossroads II. Sunday, September 24, 2023. Our Church/Ourselves:  Living the Life and Teachings of Jesus  Session 3:  Finding Courage and Conviction.  The class will be held in the Session Room. (and on Zoom)

Daniel Banks will lead our class this Sunday.  Daniel is an educator and a public speaker.  He preaches from time to time, AND he has a magnificent singing voice!

It takes courage and conviction to live in our world today, even our state.  Such courage and conviction varies depending on race, religion, socio-economic status and sexual/gender preferences and identifications.

The Bible provides astounding examples of courage and conviction through its Old- and New Testament characters.  Join us as we explore just a few!

Please join us for coffee (and on Zoom) at 8:45 and class will begin at 9:00.

Have you ever had a negative thought?  A meditation courtesy of our music director Rick Roberts.

Good morning, all.

Have you ever had a negative thought?  If you said "no", you are a saint (or a fibber).  Negativity has sometimes crept into my thoughts.  It's not good.  It saps the energy of all that's good.  Worse yet, negative thoughts become verbal thoughts and that's harmful to listeners and to yourself.

I try to avoid negativity but, I confess, it still creeps in now and then.

With that said, here is the quote of the week that's worth sharing:

"I don't harp on the negative because if you do, then there's no progression. There's no forward movement. You got to always look on the bright side of things, and we are in control. Like, you have control over the choices you make." (Taraji P. Henson)

God, too, is in control and can help you overcome negativity.

Prayer is our lifeline.  Pray often.

Have a blessed day.

With a song in my heart,  Rick

We sing hymns all the time.  I have many favorites and I find it hard to select any one hymn as my "most favorite".

I think we should know more about the hymn writers.  What inspired them?  What were there lives like?  So today, let's know a little bit more about Fanny Crosby.

Frances Jane “Fanny” Crosby (1820-1915) was an American hymn writer and poetess, who wrote over 8,000 hymns during her life. One time a preacher sympathetically remarked, “I think it is a great pity that the Master did not give you sight when He showered so many other gifts upon you.”

She replied quickly, “Do you know that if at birth I had been able to make one petition, it would have been that I should be born blind?” “Why?” asked the surprised clergyman. “Because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior!”

One of the hymns written by Ms. Crosby is "Blessed Assurance".  It is a great hymn of encouragement and comfort.  I love the words:  "Jesus is mine".

Have a blessed day filled with humming a hymn.

With a song in my heart,   Rick

Our Church/Ourselves:  Living the Life and Teachings of Jesus.   Session 2:  Introduction to Your Inward Journey.  A devotional reflection by Becky Wolf

As we focus on our inward journeys this week, please consider the inward journey Leland must have taken to lead him to his most memorable action as described  by Frederick Buechner.

"In the year 1831, it seems, this church was repaired and several new additions were made.

One of them was a new steeple with a bell in it, and once it was set in place and painted, apparently, an extraordinary event took place, 'When the steeple was added,' Howard Mudgett writes in his history, 'one agile Lyman Woodard stood on his head in the belfry with his feet toward Heaven.'

Picture
That's the one and only thing I've been able to find out about Lyman Woodard, whoever he was, but it is enough.  I love him for doing what he did.  It was a crazy thing to do.  It was a risky thing to do.  It ran counter to all standards of New England practicality and prudence.  It stood the whole idea that you're supposed to be nothing but solemn in church on its head just like Lyman himself standing upside down on his.  And it was also a magical and magnificent and Mozartian thing to do.

If the Lord is indeed our shepard (Psalm 23), then everything goes topsy-turvy.  Losing becomes finding and crying becomes laughter.  The least becomes first and the weak become strong.  Instead of life being 'done in' by death in the end as we always supposed, death is 'done in' finally by life in the end.  If the Lord is our host at the great feast, then the sky is the limit."

A thought for today from our Music Director, Rick Roberts...

I like to "ponder" about things.  It takes my imagination to soaring heights, sometimes.  It can be mind bending, sometimes.
But most always, the "Ponder" makes its way to my "memory bank" as a thought to remember.  Here is one I've been  "pondering" lately:

"The first to apologize is Bravest....
The first to forgive is Strongest, and....
The first to forget is the Happiest." (Anon.)

I think that leads to profound "ponder".
Have a blessed day, and see all of you on Sunday,  With a song in my heart,  Rick

Our Church/Ourselves:  Living the Life and Teachings of Jesus
Session 2:  Introduction to Your Inward Journey
The class will be held in the Session Room.
(and on Zoom)

Picture
This Sunday we will hear five or six very different and inspiring faith stories that describe unique “inward journeys.” We will learn what strengthened people’s faith and maybe about things that got in the way. In the process we hope to gain insights about strategies and tools that we can use for our own faith journeys.

Margaret Spontak will lead the discussion, encouraging us to share touchdown or defining moments that we may have encountered in our journeys. We all have unique ways of striving to live according to the life and values of Jesus. Margaret will explore what author Elizabeth O’Connor meant when she discussed the “inward journey” in her book Journey Inward, Journey Outward. Elizabeth O’Connor describes three parts of the inward journey. O’Connor shares, “The new forms of Church will be shaped by the need of every person to become the person he or she can become.”

We will each take home a simple worksheet to identify potential tools or disciplines that could help us maintain and build our faith.

Please join us for coffee (and on Zoom) at 8:45 and class will begin at 9:00.
