Francis Makemie (1658–1708) was an Ulster Scots clergyman.  He established the first Presbyterian church in America and is considered to be the founder of Presbyterianism in the United States.

Makemie’s  acquital in New York for preaching without a license, obtained with the help of leading New England Congregationalists, is viewed as a landmark in freedom of religion in America.

There is a a 17-foot-high statue of Francis Makemie at Makemie Monument Park on a tributary of Pokomoke Sound in Virginia.

On this day August 4, in 1708, Francis Makemie finished a long and useful life.
